Our Story

Founded in 2018, Layers of Dignity is a nonprofit organization that partners with hospitals and advocacy centers across North Carolina to care for sexual assault survivors.

After telling their story to law enforcement and undergoing an invasive forensic exam, many survivors leave the hospital feeling numb, detached, angry, or hopeless. They may need to submit their clothing as evidence and leave the hospital in used clothing or a flimsy paper gown.

“We want to help restore the layers of dignity lost.”
— Hayley Harris

Layers of Dignity provides a tote bag of new clothing and toiletries to survivors leaving the hospital. Each tote includes a hand-written letter from a fellow survivor and a next-step guide for restoring their hope and dignity. Instead of leaving in paper clothing, sexual assault survivors take the first steps to healing in brand-new clothes, armed with resources and a community that will walk with them.

Layers of Dignity hopes to put a tote in the hands of as many survivors as possible. We know assault and abuse are far too common. As long as victims are hurting, we will be there to walk with them to healing and restoration.

As a nonprofit, our work is made possible by the generous donations of those in our community who believe in our mission to support survivors of sexual assault. If you’re in a place to contribute financially, please consider giving at the link below.

Carrying on

"Years down the road, we survivors continue to carry the weight of assault. It’s heavier some days and lighter the next. But one day, you’ll make yourself proud, and the load will be a little lighter.”
